Raw sewage flows by gravity into the first stage of the primary settlement zone (5) of the mini biofilter. Here the solids settle out leaving the liquid to pass through to the second stage (6) for further settlement before reaching the irrigation zone (7). The effluent is then pumped (9) into the distribution system (1) and sprayed uniformly across the media (2), where it slowly drains through the media bed. The effluent is recycled many times through the media to achieve the necessary standard. Finally, the fully treated effluent is pumped or gravitates to watercourse or soakaway via the integral sample chamber (4). |

Our biofilter is a compact, highly efficient, self-contained anaerobic treatment plant which acts like a septic tank but doesn't need a leaching bed. The biofilter treats the effluent, dramatically reducing the BOD and suspended solids prior to discharge, typically giving a 90% reduction to a BOD of only 20mg/l the equivalent of rain water. Our range of biofilters is designed to consistently achieve these levels regardless of soil conditions or amount of land that you own.

Creating a leaching bed requires a large area of ground to be cleared, destroying trees and vegetation at great cost to the property owner and environment. Although the effluent from a septic tank is not permitted to discharge into a ditch or river system, leaching bed systems typically fail and clog the soil around their pipes, releasing untreated effluent into the surrounding environment where it contaminates the subsoil and eventually seeps up to the surface. Extending leaching beds into a ditch or storm drain is often considered as a short term solution, however, this is illegal. Usually the only course of action is an overhaul of the leaching bed, with serious cost implications as well as disruptions to landscaping. In many cases, this still does not solve the problem.
